Every year the Village of East Aurora conducts a street tree planting. Page down and you will find pictures and descriptions for the trees slated for planting in Spring 2009. In order to see all of the postings, you will need to go to the Blog Archive on the right of the screen and click on 10/5 -10/12, or when you reach the bottom, simply click on "older posts". You will find a diverse selection which reflects efforts by the village to avoid over-planting of any single tree species.
The Tree Board surveys an area of the village every year to identify open planting sites. If your property has a site that is suitable for planting, you will receive a letter from the Tree Board in October, 2008.
Plantings are done by village quadrant in order to streamline the planting process. This spring we will be planting the Northeast quadrant, which is comprised of the area East of North Grove Street and North of Main Street. Requests for plantings in other quadrants will be filled as resources permit. The schedule will be 2010 - Southeast, 2011 - Southwest, 2012 - Northwest, 2013 - Northeast.
If you have questions or concerns, you may email the East Aurora Village Tree Board at TreesPleaseEA@Yahoo.com.

The oldest tree known, the Ginkgo is one of the more beautiful trees. Its fan-shaped leaves turn an amazing shade of golden yellow in the fall. Past experience has taught us to plant only male Ginkgo trees, which DO NOT BEAR FRUIT. This tree is a slow to medium grower, and can reach up to 80ft. at maturity. Its growth habit is more upright, making it a good choice where a large columnar variety is required.
This tree has caused a lot of excitement for those who have been lucky enough to receive a planting. With its glossy dark green leaves that turn to yellow/orange/scarlet/purple in the fall, it is a real show stopper! Reaching in excess of 40ft. at maturity, it is a slow to medium grower that can do well in shade as well as sun. It has a dense branching habit which may need some pruning to keep in check. We are hoping to plant more of these in East Aurora, but availablility has been limited due to its increase in popularity. As we try to plant fewer Maples, the Black Gum can help fill the gap with its lovely fall color.

KatsuratreeThe Katsuratree is a beautiful tree with heart-shaped leaves. It reaches 50ft. when full-grown, and has a more uniform canopy than many other trees. Fall color is a lovely peachy-orange. It gives off a fragrance of cotton-candy or baked cookies in the fall! It is a great choice when a larger tree is desired but space is somewhat limited. This tree must be well watered during the first few years in order to get it well established.
The redbud is a native tree that does well in full sun, but can also tolerate some shade. Its branches are covered in April with beautiful pink to purple flowers. Heart-shaped leaves follow. Reaching a height of 25ft., it is a nice medium-sized tree suitable for residential areas where a smaller tree is desired under a shady canopy of larger trees.

Spring 2009 Street Tree Planting Choices

Aristocrat Callery PearThis lovely ornamental tree has glossy green leaves and sports a white blossom in spring. Fall color is yellow/orange. It reaches about 40ft. tall by 30ft. wide at maturity. The ornamental pears bear insignificant fruit and are not a littler problem. It is a fast grower and is ideal for planting areas 6 to 12 feet wide.
This lovely ornamental crabapple with double-rose flowers is a medium to fast grower. Its mature size is 15ft., making it the perfect choice for underwire plantings. It is disease and pest resistant, and since it is an ornamental cultivar, the fruit is insignificant and will not cause a litter problem.
